Our Company

Marienberg Wines:
Marienberg Wines was founded by Ursula Pridham in 1966. She was Australia's first official female winemaker who built a successful career and an admirable reputation, producing quality wines from McLaren Vale. The name, Marienberg, comes from the imposing historic fortress that has looked over the town of Wurzburg for 1300 years. Ursula chose the name to commemorate her German origin and to provide a useful icon for her brand. This massive fortress has been modified and added to by successive owners and conquerors and is now a testament to a long progression of styles. We like to think that the Marienberg wines are imbued with that character; though changing to meet the latest styles still always sitting on firm and timeless foundations.

The James Australia Group acquired Marienberg in 2002 and continue to produce top quality wines that have gained a tremendous following amongst dedicated wine lovers. Marienberg Wines has received a steady flow of both national and international recognition. These accolades reflect the quality of the wines, which are packaged and labeled to compliment their elegant and contemporary style

Fern Hill Estate Wines:
Wayne and Pat Thomas founded Fern Hill Estate Wines at McLaren Flat in the 1970's. In those days the winery was known as Thomas Fern Hill and it was under that name that the reputation for producing limited quantities of exceptional regional wines was forged. Fern Hill Estate quickly grew in prominence and for many years has been a popular destination for wine lovers from all over Australia. Wayne and Pat Thomas sold Thomas Fern Hill in 1994 and it is now a part of the James Australia Group. Fern Hill Estate wines have recently been relocated from McLaren Flat to share the cellar door outlet with Marienberg Wines at 2 Chalk Hill Road, McLaren Vale. Today the Fern Hill range is composed of varietals derived from the best producing areas for each style.

Marienberg Limeburner's Restaurant:
Limeburner's Restaurant was officially opened in March 1997 and has since received numerous awards in architecture, food and wine (Restaurant and Catering Australia, American Express and Diners Club Awards). Limeburner's Restaurant derives its name from the third occupant of the cottage, Simeon Dunstone, a local stonemason and limeburner who resided in the cottage (which is now utilized as a cosy wine bar) from the mid to late 1800's until his death in 1922.

The restaurant itself has been built onto the old cottage and offers concertina doors that open the entire restaurant to an open-air style verandah. Our team of chefs utilize local regional produce to create menu items best described as modern Australasian to compliment the extensive wine range, not only of Marienberg and Fern Hill, but also many of the smaller boutique wineries in and around McLaren Vale. Limeburner's Restaurant offers some 20 wines by the glass and all Marienberg and Fern Hill Estate wines at Cellar Door price.
